Northampton Carnival Features Page ...

This years Northampton Carnival took place over the weekend of the 8th June 2007 it featured different elements coming together to form the carnival weekend itself, it all started with Northampton Meets New Orleans on the Friday nightin the market square a combination of different styles of music and culture. The lineup featured artists such as Accrington Stanley, Bam Samba, Clifford Baldry Irish Group, The Polish Band, San Deep, and the 6th Ward Jazz band all the way from New Orleans closing an amazing concert. Many of the crowd enjoyed the night as the sunset became colourful just emulating how good the weekend was set to be.

Carnival itself featured on Saturday, 9th when on a frosty morning with the sun streaking out of the tree's at delapre I witnessed in the early morning the park transformed into an amazing scene. Community after community school after school of people came forward to take part in the huge event turning up in amazing costumes to this years theme of Earth, Wind, Fire, Water. The park itself also featured largely in the plans for the day hosting the mystic crew, the clifford baldry irish group and Storm a previous headliner of the Trinidad & Tobago international carnival.

38 odd floats and troupes were present at the carnival and the crowds on the route were imense it was rumoured 8,000 or so had come to see the carnival on its route culminating in a totally packed out road around all saints church. The carnival wound along its route up abingtonm street, St Giles Street Guildhall Road, Cattlemarket back to the park. people crammed into the park for the carnival returning from its 2 hour journey to see performances and the funfair in full swing with huge crowds sitting in front of the stage featuring Storm. It was a great day in our history cementing us on the map in the calender of Northampton's events.

Best Designed Float - Delapre Primary School, Best Visiting Float/Troupe - Mahogany, Beat Musical Float/Troupe - Carlsberg Scottish Pipers

The sunday brought a more chilled out atmosphere in the market square with Chaplins Stage School, Northampton's Classical Orchestra, Pure Genius and 6th Ward Jazz band performing again, again the crowds were big and filled the market square with culture and style, the fishmarket was on hand to support the event and open for the cafe and the gallery as a place of R&R and show off Northampton's unique mix of art and music. All was all together a fantastic way to end the weekend of fun.
